License

Every effect is free to use, in your own projects and in client work, and you're welcome to share them. What you can't do is sell them on their own.

In short

Full license

Effect code is released under the Effect Atlas License, written for this site and adapted from the MIT License and the Commons Clause. Source available on GitHub; this is not an open-source license.

This license is adapted from the MIT License and the Commons Clause. It is not

Definitions

"The Effects" means the code, styles, and demo files published as Effect Atlas
at effectatlas.com and in the Effect Atlas repository, and any modified version
of them, including a version rewritten for another framework or library.

"Your Project" means a website, app, or design that you build, or that you build
for a client, in which the Effects are one part of a larger work and not its
main value.

1. Permission

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of
the Effects, to use, copy, modify, combine, and rename the Effects in Your
Project, for any purpose, including commercial use, and to publish and
distribute Your Project with the Effects included in it, subject to the
conditions below.

2. Client work

You may build Your Project for a client, charge a fee for that work, and deliver
the finished project to the client, including its source code with the Effects
in it. This is not selling or redistributing the Effects, as long as the Effects
are not delivered as a standalone product or collection.

3. Sharing and restrictions

You may share or publish the Effects, modified or not, outside Your Project,
for example in a tutorial, a course, a code demo, a template, or an open-source
project, provided that you keep the copyright notice. A credit to Effect Atlas
with a link to effectatlas.com is appreciated but not required.

Whether for a fee or free of charge, you may not:

  a. sell the Effects on their own, individually or as a set. Selling a
tutorial or course that uses the Effects is not selling the Effects on
     their own;
  b. remove the copyright notice;
  c. mirror effectatlas.com or the Effect Atlas repository, in whole or in
     substantial part.

Forks: viewing the Effect Atlas repository on GitHub and forking it there, as
GitHub's Terms of Service allow, does not break this license. A fork grants no
rights beyond this license, and publishing a fork as a website (for example on
GitHub Pages) or as a package (for example on npm) is mirroring under 3c.

4. Notice

Keep the copyright notice above and a reference to this license (for example,
the comment at the top of effect.js) in the source code of every copy of the
Effects. You do not have to credit Effect Atlas anywhere visible in Your
Project.

5. Third-party code

Some effects ship with third-party libraries, such as three.js. Those libraries
remain under their own licenses, which are included next to them.

6. No warranty

THE EFFECTS ARE PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR
IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY,
FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE
AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER
LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM,
OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE EFFECTS OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE
EFFECTS.

Takedown

If you believe an effect copies your work too closely, email hello@effectatlas.com with a link to your original. We'll review it and change or remove the effect if the concern holds up.
